Chasing Waterfalls

The Coromandel is home to a variety of stunning waterfalls, offering scenic beauty and peaceful retreats for nature lovers. If you're seeking a refreshing swim or simply looking for serene surroundings, these hidden gems provide memorable experiences. From easily accessible spots to more adventurous trails, each waterfall offers its own unique charm.

Owharoa Falls, easily accessible from Waitawheta Road, is a popular local swimming spot. Situated just a few metres off the main road, opposite the entrance to The Falls Retreat, it boasts beautiful cascading waterfalls. However, care must be taken as the area is prone to strong currents, snags, slippery rocks, and deep holes. A perfect destination for a peaceful day out with caution.

Located 3 km along Hikuai Settlement Road from Pāuanui, Tangiteroria Stream Waterfall is a serene natural retreat. A small layby marks the beginning of the 20-minute walk to this picturesque spot, where the waterfall flows into three deep swimming holes surrounded by rocky edges. Enjoy the tranquillity, but be cautious of the slippery rocks.

Just a short 3km walk from Whangamatā, Wentworth Valley Falls offers a family-friendly adventure through regenerating forest. Accessed via State Highway 25, 7km south of Whangamatā township, this easy trail takes you to a stunning two-drop waterfall. Along the way, discover historic gold mining features and enjoy picnic areas at the DOC campsite.

Waiau Falls, accessed along the 309 Road, leads you through a beautiful bush glade to a waterfall cascading over a rock face into a deep pool below. This spot is ideal for swimming and relaxation with tracks available both upstream and downstream. Located 7 km from Coromandel Town, it’s a must-visit for nature enthusiasts.

Private Waterfalls
For a more exclusive experience, Ngatea Watergardens and Rapaura Watergardens feature beautiful waterfalls within their properties. An entry fee grants access to these lush, private gardens, where you can marvel at these natural wonders. Please note that Ngatea Waterfall is not suitable for swimming.
