 DAY 1
- Depart Auckland and take the one and a half hour tour along the Pacifi c Coast
Highway to the Seabird Coast. Stop en route at the Miranda Shorebird Centre to learn about
this world-renowned bird watching destination.
- Continue your journey across the Hauraki Plains on to Ngatea. Spend your late
morning experiencing the wonders of Ngatea Watergardens.
- Then take the 20 minute drive to Paeroa, lunch at the L & P Café and
potter away the afternoon in the town’s many antique stores. Once the car is loaded with
discoveries take your fi rst drive through the Karangahake Gorge. Enjoy the breathtaking drive
through to Waihi and think ahead for the next day’s excursions.
- Stay the night in Waihi at one of the great boutique accommodations available.
Eat in or take the advice of your host as to excellent meal options.
DAY 2
 Rise early and take a tour of the Martha
Mine with Waihi Gold Mine Tours, once armed with information take the Goldfi elds Railway
train straight back into the Karangahake Gorge and spend the rest of your morning exploring
the area you longed to discover last evening. Wind around the river discovering goldmining
relics and tunnels and be sure not to miss the gold stamper battery processing plant.
- After your busy morning be sure to lunch at the local Ohinemuri Estate Winery,
part of the Homegrown Food Trail.
- Once returned to Waihi play away the afternoon with a guided tour of the Waihi
and Waihi Beach area with Bularangi.
- With the pace of the day you’ll want to spend one more night at your
Southern Coromandel accommodation before continuing your journey.
