MOE Code of Practice signatory

International students are welcomed by the friendly Thames High School students. Thames, an historic gold-mining settlement about 75 minutes drive from Auckland, is the region's largest town. The school was established in 1880 and has a proud history of academic excellence. In 2002 a teacher from the school was chosen as the top secondary school teacher in New Zealand in the National Teaching Excellence Awards; the same year 8 national scholarships were awarded to Thames High School students, one of whom received the top mark in New Zealand in her subject.

A co-educational school of about 650 students, it offers a wide range of subjects, including specialized ESOL, drama, photography and French classes. Excellent teaching and sporting facilities include a specialized technology block, three computer suites, a gymnasium with a rock-climbing wall and a swimming pool. Accommodation is in supervised homestays in the area.
