Hauraki Rail Trail

Construction of the Hauraki Rail Trail is currently 95% complete.

Construction is 'cranking' on the Hauraki Rail Trail with some 35km of Trail surfaced and completed, 35 bridges in place or under construction and some 60km of fencing completed.

Paeroa to Te Aroha

Through farm land, the views are vast, and exhilarating.The trail itself is compact, reasonably smooth and easy to ride. A great part of the trail to explore and experience!

Paeroa to Waikino

A stunning ride amongst nature,... it doesnt get any better than this. A tranquil environment that makes you forget about your stresses and the fact that you are exercising! It is so enjoyable, everyone that you pass on the trail is smiling.

Work is still underway to identify a route from Waikino to Waihi.

Thames to Paeroa

This leg of the trail is now open through to Thames Parking is available by the old Kopu Bridge, where you can access the trail from an underpass under the highway or in Thames at the Wharf.

Waikino to Waihi

This section is under construction now. Follow the progress here

About the Hauraki Rail Trail

The Hauraki Rail Trail, on completion, will be a grade one 2-day ride, making it an ideal weekend experience.

It can be accessed from Thames, Paeroa, Waihi, or Te Aroha, and the trail also offers a range of shorter riding options, including day rides.

The trail showcases some of the best scenery New Zealand has to offer, rich in pioneering history.

 

A major highlight includes riding through the stunning Karangahake Gorge, one of the “14 Wonders of New Zealand”.

Key attractions include Thames – western gateway to the Coromandel, Paeroa - the home of the World famous L&P bottle, Waihi – historic gold mining town, only 10 minutes from the beautiful Waihi Beach, Te Aroha – home to the luxurious, historic Te Aroha Mineral Spas and the Te Aroha Leisure Pools, old mining infrastructure such as the Victoria battery, the Blackpool Dam and Water Race and the Waihi-Waikino vintage railway.

Dogs on the Trail

Dogs on leads are permitted in the Karangahake Gorge section of the Rail Trail from Waikino Station to the old Karangahake Hall site at Crown Bridge at the northern end of Victoria Tunnel, and where the Rail Trail intersects the urban areas of Waihi, Paeroa, Te Aroha and Thames.

DOGS ARE NOT PERMITTED on any other section of the Rail Trail.
