Parts of the Hauraki Rail Trail are open for riding!


YOU CAN CURRENTLY RIDE...

Between Karangahake and Waikino. This is a 7km section of trail through the spectacular Karangahake Gorge. This ride has parking available at both ends and is suitable for families.

Also open is the trail along the Paeroa stop bank


MOUNTAIN BIKE hire will be available this summer from Te Aroha, Paeroa and the Waikino railway station


DISTANCE...

There are three legs to the trail:

Thames to Paeroa – 33km
Paeroa to Waihi – 20km (Part of this section is now open)
Paeroa to Te Aroha – 20km

GRADE...

The Hauraki Rail Trail is Grade 1 – the easiest grade, suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
The trail is mostly flat - 98% has a gradient of less than 2°. The other 2% has a gradient of 2-4°.

FACILITIES...

Toilets will be provided approximately 7.5-10kms
Rubbish bins will be available along the trail. Litter and weed control will be managed by the cycleway operator.
Screen planting will be provided where required to protect the privacy of property owners.

CONSTRUCTION...

The trail will be a compacted gravel surface, approximately 2.5m wide
The majority of the trail through farmland will be fenced on both sides
Bridges will be 1.5m wide

CYCLE ROUTE DIRECTIONS...

The first 7km section of the Hauraki Rail Trail between the Karangahake Hall and the Waikino Café has been completed and is now ready to ride. From Karangahake Hall (6km south of Paeroa), ride around to the swing bridge, or ride through the tunnel to Waikino. The trail is grade 1, so this is an ideal day out for the whole family.

BEST TIME TO RIDE...

The trail’s easy gradient and great local climate make it a good ride all-year-round. If you prefer to stay clean and dry, the best months to ride the Hauraki Rail Trail are September to May. Whatever the weather you’ll be able to cool off at nearby Waihi Beach, or warm up at the famous Te Aroha Mineral Spas. The trail is a grade 1 ride, which will cater for all levels of riding ability including families and cyclists of all ages.
