St George’s Anglican Church

St George’s Anglican Church in Thames was founded in a pub, Butt’s Hotel in Pollen Street to be precise. Following that meeting of local Anglicans the first St George’s was opened in May 1868 on a piece of land in Rolleston Street gifted by local iwi Ngati Maru. Ngati Maru also gave the land for the second church, which has stood at the corner of Mary and Mackay Streets since 1872.

St George’s is a good example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture and the church hall is in act the 1868 church, which was relocated to this site in 1909.

Visitors are welcome Monday through Friday from 9.00am until 5.00pm and on Saturday mornings. Service times are 9.30am on Sundays and 10.00am on Thursdays.
