Stone Fish Trap

Coromandel Town

The fish trap was built by Ngati Tamatera to harvest flounder from Umangawha-o-nga-waka (Colville Bay).

Stone fish traps are also known to have been built at Banks Peninsula in the South Island. They were one method used by
Maori to gather kai moana (seafood) in pre-European times.

The trap is still in use today, having been maintained by local people over the years.
