The Coromandel Heritage Trust was formed in 2003 to establish THE TREASURY, now utilising the beautiful historic Carnegie Building as a research and family history centre. A purpose-built regional archive has been built alongside to preserve early records in the best possible conditions. The Trust collects, preserves and promotes the history and stories of the people and places in the Thames, Coromandel and Hauraki region - a region which played a big part in the early development of New Zealand.

The Treasury received a Heritage Award in the 2015 Waikato / Bay of Plenty Architecture Awards, which means that it is now eligible to be entered in the NZIA's annual architecture awards programme

RESEARCH
The Treasury houses an ever-growing collection of resources relating to the early history of Thames and the entire Hauraki region. For the historical researcher or genealogist we have a large collection of history books about the towns and the people of the region (including an excellent collection of Captain Cook and Maori reference books), historical manuscripts, newspapers, magazines, photographs, Jubilee books, family records, certificates, school records, microfiche, CDs, newspapers on film, and MANY folders containing loose information about people and places. These include the Pre-1930 Businesses of Thames, the Hotels of Thames, Thames Hospital, Hauraki Schools, information about all the goldmines, batteries, and mining companies we have been able to find in the Hauraki region, lists of local Boer War servicemen, local WWI servicemen. Thanks to Quick Map, you are now able to look at early maps. Everything is filed clearly for you to find easily. Two volunteers will be in the Reading Room to help point you in the right direction.
