Whitianga War Memorial, Soldiers Memorial Park Whitianga

Whitianga

Whitianga’s Soldiers’ Memorial Park, which was vested with the local council in 1942, was developed over a number of years as an important civic space.

A number of memorial objects are located in the park, first among them the World War I and II Memorial obelisk (c.1920).

A cannon from the HMS Buffalo, presented by Captain Albert Duder, is associated with the 1840 sinking which gave Buffalo Beach its name.

An in-ground plaque commemorating the 75th anniversary of the end of World War I was installed in 1993.

The Park is the setting for Mercury Bay’s ANZAC Day commemorations each year.
