Towards 2020: A Strategic Plan for Tourism in the Coromandel to the year 2020

Tourism Coromandel has a multi faceted role. It is a marketing and promotional outfit attracting domestic and international visitors to the region but hand in hand with this is a responsibility to the local community. This responsibility is twofold:

  • to protect the unique values that the Coromandel offers those who live here and those who visit
  • to facilitate sustainable and responsible economic growth for the region through tourism

The Towards 2020 Strategy was originally developed in 1994 following the most extensive consultation exercise on the peninsula - 23 public forums. It truly represents the views of the local communities and the vision remains as pertinent today as it was 10 years ago:

To develop the tourism industry as a source of economic growth and community enhancement with minimal impacts on the special values of the Coromandel's natural environment and lifestyle.

Tourism Coromandel is committed to regular reviews of the strategy. Quantitative data and targets were updated in 1998. A qualitative review including further consultation with the local communities was completed in June 2004.

Tourism Coromandel have undertaken a priority setting and scheduling exercise based on the revised Towards 2020 Strategy. The project schedule for mid 2004 - mid 2007 is available for download below and will be updated annually.
