Activities around Waihi and Waihi Beach
With a gold mining history spanning three centuries, Waihi - New Zealand’s Heart of Gold is one of the most famous gold mining centres in New Zealand, and still very much a gold town. Examples of its rich heritage are scattered throughout the town and the famous Martha Mine is still churning out gold and silver bullion today. The vast open pit is revealed to visitors beyond the leafy slopes next to the main street, adjacent to the magnificent Cornish Pumphouse.
The Ohinemuri River flows through Waihi on its way to the ‘must-do’ Karangahake Gorge. In the gorge you can fish for trout, take walks through old mining tunnels and relics, or cycle the Hauraki Rail Trail. Friendly local cafés and restaurants provide luscious food and you’ll be able to buy local arts and crafts along the way.
Waihi Beach, just 10km from Waihi, offers 9km of sweeping white sand and is one of the safest surf beaches in New Zealand. Laze on the beach, swim in the surf or try something a little more adventurous like boogie boarding, surfing or kayaking.

The bush, stunning Karangahake Gorge and the white sand of Waihi Beach are a few reasons why visitors flock to Waihi & Waihi Beach; famous gold mining towns where gold mining relics are apparent everywhere.
