How We Rate NZ Online Casinos
Every score on this site comes from the same process: we open a real account, deposit our own money, play, and time the withdrawal to the minute. This page is that process in full, so you can judge our judgement.
The test starts where most reviews stop: the withdrawal
Anyone can review a casino on the way in. The lobby is shiny, the bonus banner is big, and nothing has been asked of the operator yet. We review on the way out. Before a casino earns a place in any ranking here, someone on our team in New Zealand has put a deposit through it, played enough to trigger the real machinery, requested a cashout and started a stopwatch. We record the verification steps, the pending time, and whether the money that arrived matched the money we asked for.
That single habit filters out most of the sites we look at. A casino that pays a small withdrawal slowly, or asks for the same document three times, will do worse when real money is on the table — and it never makes the list.
The weightings we score against
Each casino gets scored across six areas. The percentages are the weight each carries in the final mark out of five.
- The withdrawal test — 30%. Timed with our own money. E-wallet, card and (where offered) crypto rails, verification friction, and whether stated processing times match reality.
- Licence and ownership — 20%. We confirm who holds the licence and that the operating company is named. A site that hides who runs it doesn’t get rated at all.
- Bonus terms — 20%. Wagering multiple, max-bet rules, game weighting, expiry and win caps, read line by line. A big headline with 60x wagering scores worse than a modest offer at 30x.
- Games library — 15%. Real studios (Pragmatic Play, Play’n GO, NetEnt, Hacksaw and peers), search that works, live-dealer depth.
- Support — 8%. We open live chat with an awkward, specific question and time how long a human takes to give a real answer.
- Safer-gambling tools — 7%. Deposit limits, cool-offs and self-exclusion must be easy to find and switch on.
What makes a casino "safe" or "trusted" in a market with no local licence yet
People search for the safest online casino in NZ or the most trusted online casino in NZ, and the honest answer is that safety here is behaviour, not a badge. Nearly every casino open to New Zealanders is licensed offshore, so your protection comes from how the operator actually behaves: whether it verifies accounts properly, pays on time, holds your balance in NZ dollars, and honours its own terms. That is exactly what our testing measures. The safest sites in our rankings are the ones that have repeatedly paid us — not the ones with the most certificates in the footer.
Ratings move, and casinos get dropped
A rating here is a snapshot, not a lifetime award. We re-test: offers change, payout speeds slip, support desks get worse. When that happens, scores move, the top-10 order changes, and a site that stops paying cleanly comes off the ranking entirely. You’ll sometimes find a review on this site for a casino that’s no longer in our top 10 — the review stays live because the testing stands, and the notice at the top tells you its current status.
How we make money, and why it doesn't move a score
We may earn a commission when you join a casino through our links. That funds the testing — deposits, withdrawals and the hours in between — and it never changes a number on this site. The proof is in the rankings themselves: scores fall and casinos get dropped regardless of any commercial relationship, because a recommendation you can’t trust is worthless to you and, soon after, to us.
