Pauanui
The holiday paradise of Pauanui is a resort town designed and built with relaxation in mind. Lying on a narrow strip of land between the Pacific Ocean and a shallow tranquil harbour, it is across the water from neighbouring Tairua, although it's 30km by road. One of the region's longest swimming beaches, plenty of recreational areas, golfing, boating, fishing, surfing, wind and kite-surfing if the breeze is right. .
Stay & Explore
There are numerous walking trails, and a climb to the top of Mount Pauanui is a must for the view io the carefully laid-out town at your feet. You may even see a small aircraft fly beneath you to land on the airstrip.
Across the mouth of the harbour stands Mount Paku, a twin-coned volcanic peak that was once an island, while off shore lie Slipper, Shoe and Aldermen Islands. A number of charter fishing boats operate from both wharves and the beaches are perfect for safe swimming and surfing in most conditions. This east-coast location is perfect for exploring further afield, and The Coromandel icons of Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach are 45 minutes' drive away to the north.
