Orokawa Bay Walk

This walk takes you to a beautiful pohutukawa lined beach., perfect for picnics. And if you continue on, there's more to explore.

About

The walk to Orokawa Bay starts at the northern end of Waihi Beach. The popular track is easy walking through native bush, skirting the coastal headlands before descending into Orokawa Bay.

This beach is not considered safe for swimming due to the steep grade of the seafloor, but is popular for picnicking with its lovely overhanging pohutukawa.

Time: 1 hour 20 minute return

There is a 45-minute detour to the 28m high William Wright Falls. but the track is washed out and now follows the stream bed.

At the northern end of Orokawa Bay, a tramping track continues on to the equally beautiful and secluded Homunga Bay.

Tip: A well formed track, however you may get your feet wet at the start of the walk. It may not be possible to access this track from the beach at times of high tide and strong swell.

Directions: The track is signposted from the northern end of Waihi Beach.

NOTE: This beach is not patrolled by Surf Life Saving NZ and can be affected by dangerous conditions. Check our local patrolled beaches https://www.safeswim.org.nz/
