New Zealanders use over 295 million single-use cups every year, with around 250,000 used in Mercury Bay alone. Enough to stretch from Whitianga to Tairua! Now there is a move in Mercury Bay to say ‘No’ to the Single Use Cup ( SUC).

With all the bad news about plastic pollution - overflowing landfills and the effects on nature, we are often left feeling helpless to make a change.

The problems -polluted oceans, micro-plastics in marine-life, birds choking on plastic packaging – seem overwhelming and irreversible.

But thanks to the waste minimising team at Wāhi Tukurua there is something we can do – one small change that will make an enormous difference. We can put an end to the single-use takeaway cup.

Horrified by these statistics and inspired by campaigns in other regions we began talking to local coffee vendors (cafe owners, garages, coffee carts and concession holders) about the problem.

The good news is that local cafes are taking up the challenge and are now offering many resuable options for customers.

  • SIT-  Take a seat to enjoy your hot drink
  • BORROW -  Use a returnable cup on offer at your café, from their 'cup library' or 'boomerang basket'
  • RESUSABLE -  Bring your own reusable cup or purchase a 'Chunky cup' loan cup for just $10. (you can return your cup and get your $10 back at any participating cafe throughout new Zealand!)

Visit the SUC Free - Single use Cup Free - Mercury Bay Facebook or Instagram pages for a full list of participating cafes in the Mercury Bay.
