Waiau Falls
Along the 309 Road lies the entrance to the trail to the Waiau Falls. Walk through a beautiful bush glade to the place where the waterfall streams over a rock face into a deep pool below. There is access by track both upstream and downstream of the falls, and it's a great spot for a swim.
Time: 2 minutes each way
Directions: Waiau Falls can be viewed from the roadside 7 km along the 309 Road (from Coromandel Town end). Beautiful native bush surrounds the falls and its popular swimming hole.
Kauri Grove
The Kauri Grove is a spectacular stand of kauri trees soaring above the surrounding forest, with the walkway starting 1km further along the road past the falls. These kauri are of special significance to The Coromandel, being the largest, easily accessible grove of mature kauri in the region, and they are truly magnificent. The track is very well formed with footbridges and boardwalks, which take you close to the trees. An excellent walk for nature lovers. Please be sure to use the wash stations to prevent contamination of these ancient natural taonga.
Time: 30 mins each way
Directions: 8km up the 309 Road (from the Coromandel Town end) a walking track takes you to the most accessible and mature kauri stand on the Peninsula. The grove contains a ‘siamese’ kauri which forks just above the ground.
