The Backdrop Trust - Planting Project
The Backdrop Trust Project is an exciting restoration initiative situated on 150 acres of land directly across the river from Whitianga Marina. This collaborative effort between the Backdrop Trust and the Mercury Bay Environmental Trust (MBET) aims to revitalise the area by removing pest species and re-establishing a lowland coastal forest that thrived 150 years ago. The project is inspired by local visionary Jo McNiel, who placed a covenant on this land.
As part of this initiative, a network of walking tracks will be developed, providing access for the public to explore the area and learn about its cultural and environmental significance.
Why Plant Here:
-
Support the growth of native flora and fauna, helping to restore the ecosystem and increase native bird populations.
-
The walking tracks will offer recreation and educational resources, connecting locals and visitors to the area's rich history and ecology.
-
Establishing trails encourages eco-tourism, inviting visitors to experience the natural beauty of The Coromandel while contributing to its preservation.
Your donation will directly support the cost of locally/eco-sourced native plants supplied by Mercury Bay Environment Trust. This project represents a significant step towards restoring the environment while creating a vibrant, regenerative destination for all who visit.
