Kūaotunu Dune Care - Planting Project
Grays Beach, with its stunning coastal dines, has long been a beloved spot for visitors to Kūaotunu. First planted by dedicated volunteers in the 1990s, these back dunes are once again in need of restoration as invasive plants have encroached, threatening the native scrub and archeological sites that make this area unique. Kūaotunu Dune Care is leading the effort to restore these dunes, creating a thriving ecosystem that preserves this beach's natural beauty and history.
Why Plant Here:
- Help protect and rejuvenate native scrub and tree species struggling against invasive plants.
- Support the planting of sand-binding vegetation to stabilize dunes, preserving the shoreline and enhancing the beach experience for visitors.
- Safeguard important archaeological sites, including existing middens on the dune faces.
- Foster a healthy dune habitat for native species, adding to the richness of the coastal landscape.
Your donation will directly support Kūaotunu Dune Care's efforts to restore and preserve Grays Beach, allowing locals and visitors to connect with nature, history, and the scenic beauty of Kūaotunu’s coastline.
