Chunky - The Chunky Loan Cup System

The Chunky Loan Cup System is about reducing waste, but most importantly, it’s about educating and leading behavioural change. We all want less consuming, more reusing and here's how you can get amongst it. If you forgot your own cup just borrow a Chunky! Pay the participating café $10 as a refundable deposit for the use of the loan cup.

You can then choose to bring the cup back to be used for your next coffee or swap it for a clean one. Alternatively, you can bring back the cup in return for your deposit. The cups can be returned to any business participating in the Chunky loan cup system.

Single Use Cup Free Whitianga

New Zealanders use over 295 million single-use cups every year, with around 250,000 used in Mercury Bay alone. Enough to stretch from Whitianga to Tairua!

Now there is a move in Mercury Bay to say ‘No’ to the Single Use Cup ( SUC).

The good news is that local cafes are taking up the challenge and are now offering many resuable options for customers.

  • SIT-  Take a seat to enjoy your hot drink
  • BORROW -  Use a returnable cup on offer at your café, from their 'cup library' or 'boomerang basket'
  • RESUSABLE -  Bring your own reusable cup or purchase a 'Chunky cup' loan cup for just $10. (you can return your cup and get your $10 back at any participating cafe throughout New Zealand!)
